Station 2 - Substitutes
On this Substitutes activity page, the student has completed the activity, clicked on "compare,"
and is seeing the results of his/her efforts. The student is in the processes of completing the Substitutes activity.
- What
One word in each of these sentences can be replaced by a word from the target list.
- How
Students will find their Personal Dictionary particularly useful in this activity. Many
of the substitute words in the sentences come directly out of the definitions.
Students first choose the word in the sentence they wish to replace from the drop-down menu.
They then choose the word they wish to use as the replacement in the same manner.
Checking off the words from the target word list helps to keep track of words that have already been used.
All sentences must be completed before they will be scored.

Why
This activity helps students recognize context clues by both word association and topic identification. In the process,
they use their Personal Dictionary, redefining and reviewing their understanding of the words. Students
will have the opportunity to see the correct replacement within the sentence if they miss one, and will need
encouragement to read it through, especially if they miss so many that they have to try again.
