Station 4 - Spelling

Station 4 consists of Spelling and Meaning. The Affix station gives students an opportunity to develop knowledge of derivatives. It identifies common affixes (prefixes, roots, suffixes) used in the target words students have learned, introduces the meanings, and asks students to use them in other words. Activities may be completed in any order. The program provides multiple opportunities for students to reach the mastery percentage required.

The student has just completed entering their answers.

  1. What
Students identify correct usage of an affix in a word and choose the meaning that fits best..
  2. How
Students see two ways to apply an affix to create a word with meaning. One is a correct word and the other is an invented or nonsense word. They must choose the correctly spelled word and identify the definition of the affix from the drop-down menu. All choices on the page must be made before the program can provide a score.
  3. Why
Knowledge of derivatives is a key ingredient to developing word knowledge. In this activity students apply their prior knowledge by recognizing common uses of affixes. They must then try to apply an affix meaning to the word, looking for how the affix affects the general meaning of the word.
