Station 2 - Connect 2
Station 2 consists of Connect 2, Substitutes, and True/False. The activities in this station provide students with an opportunity to see the target words
used in a variety of contexts and to practice their context-clue skills. Students should be given guidance in how to look
for context clues and taught the value of referring to their Personal Dictionary for ideas. For suggestions, print out the
guide, Teaching with Word Lab.
Once again, the student need only complete the number of activities assigned by the teacher.
All activities in the remainder of the stations are now scored.
The default mastery expectation is currently set at 80% but can be changed at any time for any student by the teacher. The program provides
multiple opportunities for students to reach the mastery percentage required and students may choose the order in which they complete the activities.
The student in this picture is seeing the results of their work. In this case, they received a score of 100 percent.
- What
Students are given two lists of words, the target words and helper words. Within each
sentence on the screen are two blanks. They must select one word from each list, filling in the blanks, to complete the
sentence in a manner that makes sense.
- How
The first blank from each sentence can be filled by a word from either list. There is no
special order from which to choose. Checking off the words on each list helps keep track of what has been used, as
each word may be used only once. Encourage students to use their "Personal Dictionary"
to review word meanings as needed.
All sentences must be completed before they will be scored. If students miss answers, they will have an
opportunity to see the correct answer. With a score below 80% students will be asked to go on or repeat
until the required number of activities show an 80% average.

Why
Connect 2 is a cloze activity. The cloze activity is highly valued as a teaching tool for improving context-clue recognition.
Struggling readers who learn to complete cloze activities become more attentive readers and gain confidence in making inferences.
The manual Word Lab as an Effective Teaching Tool gives tips on teaching this process.
