Belong

Station 3 - Belong

Station 3 consists of Belong, Analogies, and Antonyms. The activities in this station ask students to recognize associations between their target words and other words. They require higher-level thinking skills and help students identify relationships between words while recognizing categorizing factors. They can be done in any order. The program provides multiple opportunities for students to reach the mastery percentage required.

The student has made her/his selection on this Belong page and is ready to click on the "Compare" button.

  1. What
In this activity, students see three additional words listed beside each target word. They must surmise why only three of the four words (including the target word) belong together and fill in the blank in the clue sentence which hints at "why."
  2. How
Students select the one word that does not belong with the rest of the words. They must then complete the clue sentence so that it makes sense. They Do Not use a word from the 4 listed words to complete the sentence, but instead must come up with their own idea.
  3. Why
Students' minds must toggle back and forth between the list of 4 words and the clue sentence until it all fits together and they know what the clue is saying and which word does not belong. It is an "out of the box" thinking process and requires them to understand their choices instead of just making intuitive guesses. Scoring is based solely on correct selection of the word that does not belong.
