Word Lab is most effective as an integral component of your curriculum. The schedules below will
help you organize Word Lab time averaging 1.5 hours per week per student.
Because Word Lab guides students in the use of a variety of
comprehension strategies while involving students in reading literature,
it fits well into a balanced reading program. Once a Word Lab novel is chosen
at the student's level he/she may read the novel as part of SSR, in a literature
group, or during class read-aloud. The following schedules show three different
ways to incorporate Word lab into a regular reading program and coordinate it
with access to computers. All of these schedules have been used in the classroom
and have provided significant improvements in reading comprehension.
Schedule #1 and #2 are for classrooms that have access to a computer lab,
as well as some computers in their rooms. These are the models most commonly
used in schools with more than one classroom using Word Lab.
Schedule #3 is for classrooms with access to computers in their classrooms only.
It is the most cost efficient model for teachers who are the sole users of Word Lab
at their school.

We would love to hear from any of you who design other models for its effective use with your students.
