Overview

Word Lab is a self-paced, interactive learning tool that uses research-based best practices for internalizing word knowledge. High frequency words, derived from standard student literature, are targeted for their appropriateness and relevance, and pre-taught. Students progress through vocabulary activities applied to these target words, employing a variety of reading comprehension skills while continually receiving feedback on their success. Students will be delighted to find how frequently their new word knowledge helps in all areas of their reading. As they progress, students may also choose to read the specifically related literature, from which the word lists originate. Through the Administrator program, teachers adjust mastery expectations, difficulty levels, and receive detailed reports on students' strengths and weaknesses as they progress.

We know you will find the features of this student-tested program an invaluable addition to your reading and writing curriculums. The activities provide enrichment in both areas while connecting directly to student literature. The program provides easy access to meaningful word choices, immediate feedback, individualized pacing and expectations, efficient and effective repetition as needed, and records of student progress. Teachers will be thrilled with the timely manner in which Word Lab provides this variety and repetition, while painlessly tracking, and the ease with which their students learn.

The Program

Word Lab is web based. Two main web sites make up the program, the student site, used by students to develop new word knowledge and the administrator site, used by teachers.

Word Lab Administrator allows teachers to add students to classes, choose options based on specific student needs and teacher expectations, assign word list activities from a variety of grade level lists, retrieve and print reports, and adjust mastery expectations and repetition requirements as needed.

Student Program Structure

Word Lab guides students through two assessments and four Learning Stations for each sub set (8 to 10 words) within the larger assigned list of words. When all set activities have been completed, students take a final assessment. Note below that a collection of activities and assessments for a particular word list is called a "Workbook."

The Workbook structure proceeds as follows:

  1. Pre-assessment (Set of 8 to 10 words)
    • This activity identifies the words each student needs to learn
  2. Learning Station 1 - Definitions
    • Word Maps (students print out a personalized dictionary)
    • T-Bar Charts (students print out)
    • Feature Grids
  3. Learning Station 2 - Associations
    • Connect 2
    • Substitutes
    • True/False
  4. Learning Station 3 - Analysis
    • Belong
    • Analogies
    • Antonyms
  5. Learning Station 4 - Affixes
    • Spelling
    • Meaning
  6. Assessment
  7. Optional Writing Assignment Activity
  8. Steps 1 - 7 are repeated until all required set activities are completed for the assigned word list. The repetition level defaults are set at 2 out of 3 activities per station and mastery levels at 80% in Stations 2-4. These values may be changed by the teacher.
  9. Final Assessment - selects the top 50 new words learned by the student for additional review.
  10. Optional: Word Lab Challenge allows students to compete against other students in the school that have completed a similar word list, for speed and knowledge.
